WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
​The Goulbourn Wetland Complex, designated a Provincially Significant Wetland, is a treasured local natural resource.
  • Wetlands provide essential flood control by absorbing rainfall and controlling its flow, lessening the impact of erosion while keeping our communities safe
  • During drought, wetlands maintain surface water flow, helping surrounding vegetation and recharging groundwater over a very large area, helping to protect against forest fires
  • Wetlands replenish our drinking water aquifers by trapping sediments—filtering out bacteria and pollutants
  • Wetlands store carbon, making them a key ecosystem in the fight against climate change

Coexisting with Beavers & Urban Wetlands

BEAVERS
You might be lucky to see a beaver or its dam when walking along the trails. There is no other species that is as critical to creating and maintaining wetlands as beavers.

As a “keystone species” there isn’t a single other species that better benefits our watershed and the hundreds of other species that rely on these Wetlands.
